RC Lens conceded a frustrating 1-1 draw against OGC Nice this Saturday, during the 32nd matchday of Ligue 1. This result, snatched by the Gym at the Allianz Riviera, is a significant blow for the Sang et Or, who see their title hopes diminish, especially after Paris Saint-Germain's draw against Lorient. Pierre Sage's men thus missed a golden opportunity to close the gap to four points behind the leader before facing them at Bollaert.
The Lensois, however, started the match well, showing a clear intent to press the Nice block. Édouard quickly created a scare with a pivot shot saved by Diouf, followed by Sangaré whose attempt was blocked. The Artois club maintained possession, combining effectively on the right flank with Abdulhamid and Ganiou, gradually settling into the opponent's half.
Nice responded with bite in transition. Cho forced Baidoo into a decisive tackle, while Bah had the biggest chance of the first half from a corner, with a powerful header saved by a superb stop from Risser. In an open and committed match, Sangaré then narrowly missed opening the scoring with a left-footed curled shot, and Sarr played with fire after receiving a warning. Despite a slight Lens dominance, everything remained to be decided at the Allianz Riviera at halftime.
After the break, Nice showed good intentions, but it was Lens who struck first. From a poorly exploited Nice corner, Thomasson launched Saint-Maximin in depth. The former Nice player capitalized on a completely missed outing by Diouf to round the goalkeeper and score into an empty net in the 61st minute (0-1). A cruel goal for the Gym, who had nevertheless shown a coherent performance.
The Sang et Or then seemed to have the match in hand, and Florian Thauvin even hit the crossbar with a superb curled shot. However, the game turned in the final quarter of an hour. Abdulhamid, as the last defender, fouled Diop at the edge of the box and was logically sent off.
From the ensuing free-kick, Diop's shot was blocked, and Abdi followed up to equalize (1-1). This goal punished Lens after the red card, turning a potential victory into a frustrating draw.
This result is valuable for OGC Nice in their fight for survival, but it is very disappointing for Racing Club de Lens, who see their Ligue 1 title dreams fading. The Lensois will need to regroup quickly before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
